From a feeder fish look alike when young, once the males start to color up, they are rich and vibrant in colors. Unfortunately, the female stays white/silverish. These are one of the better cichlids to identify male/female. Males usually will start to have colors on their dorsal fins when approaching maturity and you can really see shimmering colors. Once they get to 2″-3″ inches, you can definitely tell, although the Red Cap does not appear after they reach 3-4 inches. The males’ color gets more vibrant when they are ready to breed.
